In June of 2022, Carlos Mare and Michael Walsh joined Rivers of Steel for a weeklong artist-in-residence program at the Carrie Blast Furnaces National Historic Landmark to explore the intersectionality of graffiti and metal arts. Joined by local artists Conor Clarke, Joshua Krajnak, and Jamie Matthews, the program’s scope also considered the connections with residents of adjacent Monongahela Valley communities—communities whose character has been shaped by both their industrial and post-industrial heritage. In this artist talk, Mare and Walsh, two pioneers of the graffiti sculpture movement, will share their experiences in the residency and reflect on the national graffiti sculpture movement and history.
